Who We Are

Unity in the Community Family Fun Day grew out of discussions among Mayor Lamar Fisher, BSO command staff and local clergy. These three groups desired to see a project that would bring the community together. Rev. William Clark spear headed the project in 2011 by meeting with homeowner association leaders and church leaders. He outlined his idea to provide an event that would provide a sense of camaraderie among all ethnic communities, races, religions and the five districts of Pompano Beach. A group of civic leaders formed the planning committee and partnered with the City’s Parks and Recreation Dept., BSO and the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce. The project was to create a city wide event designed to bring together the residents of Pompano Beach from all walks of life for a Family Fun Day. The goal is to foster unity among the various multi-cultural and religious groups in Pompano Beach. The idea was to present an event free of charge for all residents. There is no admission charge, no parking fee, free food and free exhibitor space. No direct selling of product is allowed at this event.
The inaugural event was held Feb. 4, 2012 at Community Park and had three areas: Exhibitor Area, Children’s Area and Entertainment on the Showmobile.

The Children’s Area includes bounce houses, face painting, a puppet show, dance and karate demonstrations and arts and crafts. Free exhibitor space is offered to businesses, churches, cultural organizations, homeowners associations and nonprofit organizations. The event attracted over 80 exhibitors the inaugural year in 2012 and over 100 exhibitors the second year in 2013. Various multi-cultural groups and local talent performed on the stage.

BSO provided several demonstrations, manpower and security. The Chamber of Commerce provided guidance and introductions to local businesses. Through the generous support of our local businesses, the food was donated and the expenses were covered.

The event has been declared a success by those in attendance, sponsors and exhibitors. BSO estimates the attendance was 3000-3500 in the second year, 2013. Exit surveys from exhibitors and attendees indicated a very positive response with an overall desire to see it occur annually. As a result, a 501(c)3 was formed to plan and implement the event each year. The 501(c)3 is Unity in the Community of Pompano Beach, Inc. The charitable purpose is to provide scholarships to deserving high school graduates who are residents of the City of Pompano Beach.
